Admission to Any Teacher Preparation Program
Applicants wishing to major in education must submit an application
to the Education Division. Admission to the College does not guarantee or
imply admission to the Teacher Education Program. Applications for admission to any teacher education
program at
Applicants will be informed in writing of any and all actions taken by the TEC. If the TEC denies an applicant admission, the reason(s) for denial will be carefully explained in writing. An applicant who is denied admission may reapply by July 1 of the following year. The application will be submitted to the TEC at the end of the last summer term of the academic year of the application submission. The applicant must meet all criteria in effect at the time of application submission.
Admission
to Teacher Education. The following criteria have been established
for admission to any
The applicant must…
1. be enrolled at
2. submit a formal application for admission to the Division of
Education with an attached copy of an ACT of 21 composite (or higher), or PPST
minimum passing scores for the state of
no later than July 1 to be considered for fall admission.
3. have completed all required courses in general knowledge with a
minimum GPA of 2.50 in general knowledge.
4. have completed all required courses in specialization knowledge with a minimum
GPA of 2.50 in specialization knowledge and no grade lower than a “C”.
5. have completed all required education courses except 400 level courses with a
minimum GPA of 2.50 in education courses and no grade lower than a “C”.
6. have a copy of the American College Test (ACT) on file in the Teacher Education
Office.
7. demonstrate competency in basic literacy skills by successfully completing one of the
test options below.
Option 1: the applicant must have a minimum composite score of 21 on the
Enhanced
Option 2: The applicant must have the state of
scores on Praxis I - Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) in
Mathematics, and Writing.
8. have an overall grade point average of 2.50 or higher (with no rounding) at Pikeville
College.
9. must demonstrate proficiency in oral and written communication skills by completing
each of the following courses with a grade of “C” or better. English 111 or 114;
English 112 or 115; and COM 225.
10. demonstrate proficiency in mathematical skills by completing MTH 111 (College
Algebra) or a higher level mathematics course with a grade of “C” or better.
11. demonstrate proficiency in computer skills by completing CS 101 (Introduction to
Computers) or a higher level computer science course with a grade of “C” or better.
12. take the PRAXIS Specialty Area Test(s).
13. complete the interview for admission to Pikeville College Teacher Education
Program with a rating of proficient or better.
14. complete the portfolio review for admission to Pikeville College Teacher Program
with a rating of proficient or better.
15. demonstrate a current and sufficient academic knowledge of certified content areas
by obtaining a rating of proficient or better on New Teacher Standard VIII on
portfolio review and interview.
16. must demonstrate an awareness of the ten dispositions an effective teacher should
possess by obtaining a rating of proficient or better on Dispositions Section of
portfolio review and interview.
17. have satisfactorily completed Phase I of Clinical Experience.
18. comply with House Bill 136 which requires a criminal background check each year
for any volunteer serving in a public school. Check must not show any convictions
that would disallow the candidate from serving as a volunteer in the school district.
19. have on file with the Division of Education three positive recommendations.

review and sign a declaration to uphold the
Professional Code of Ethics for
School Personnel.
21. sign a declaration acknowledging awareness of information required for certification
in the state of
22. keep the address, phone number, level of certification, area(s) of specialization, and
other changeable information up-to-date on the application.
23. be admitted by the Teacher Education Committee which has representation from the
College and from the public school system.
Students who plan to major in education but fail to meet any of the above admission criteria are informed of the missing components. These students should seek assistance from the Chair of Education and from their advisors. Tutorial assistance, along with other remedial opportunities, is provided for students wishing assistance of this type.
Transfer Students are required to meet all of the above stated
criteria and must attend Pikeville for at least one full semester and earn
at least twelve semester hours before applying for admission to the Teacher
Education Program. They must complete
all 400 level education courses and Education Practicum at
Post-Baccalaureate Students should meet with

Teaching
During the semester prior to student teaching, the candidate
must apply for admission to the Pikeville College Student Teaching Program.
Admission to the Teacher Education Program does not imply or guarantee admission
to the Student Teaching Program. The
candidate must have already been admitted to the Pikeville College Teacher
Education program and must meet the criteria listed below. (
The candidate must…
1. submit a formal application
for admission to
Program.
2. satisfactorily complete all prerequisites to student teaching.
3. have a minimum overall grade point average of 2.50 based on all work
completed at
not allow for rounding up or down of GPAs).
4. have completed all education courses ( with the exception of student teaching)
with a 2.50 and no grade lower than a “C”.
5. have satisfactorily completed Phase II of Clinical Experience.
6. complete the interview for admission to the Pikeville College Student Teaching
Program with a rating of proficient or better.
7. complete the portfolio review for admission to the Pikeville College Student Teaching
Program with a rating of proficient or better.
9. submit four positive recommendations.
10. have developed an interest in all dispositions an effective teacher should possess and
demonstrate this interest by obtaining a rating of proficient or better on the Disposition
Section of the portfolio
review and interview.
11. submit a valid and current physical examination report including tuberculin test.
12. not violate the Professional Code of Ethics for Kentucky School Personnel defined in
704 KAR 20:680 prior to and during the student teaching experience.
13. have passing scores on Praxis II: Subject Assessments/Specialty Area Test(s) and
passing scores on Praxis II: Principles of Learning and Teaching Test(s).
14. complete a criminal background check through the Justice Cabinet. Check must not
show any convictions that would disallow the candidate from serving as an employee
in the school district where he/she will be placed for student teaching.
15. be formally approved for admission to the Pikeville College Student Teaching
Program by the Teacher Education Committee.
